I imagine they do have essential roles in producing plastics that we might not be able to do without (in preserving medicines for example).
But, I somehow doubt that is what he means. I think that for planetary health we need to get to the point where we can stop burning fossil fuel.
I’d be very happy to see wind turbines everywhere. Hydrothermal. Hydrogen fuel if it is produced in a same way. Solar panels if they are not too mineral-hungry.
Maybe even nuclear I don’t know, if it is true that their safety has very much improved.
Whatever is viable to crack the fossil fuel addiction. I know it can’t be easy.
Lots of environmental groups campaign on this, and get demonised in the right wing press. Sometimes risk being captured opposition if they fling paint around art galleries or similar, as that really plays into critics’ hands.
People do seem to know what we’re doing to the planet, broadly speaking. Nonetheless, the will to change the system does not seem to be there for many people. I wonder if the war in Iran will shift the needle at all away from our dangerous dependency on oil. This dependency makes us vulnerable in multiple ways, after all.
